US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose more sanctions on Russia after it carried out its largest airstrikes in Ukraine. Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike across Ukraine early Sunday, killing four people and setting fire to government offices in the capital, Kiev.
After the attack, Trump told reporters he was “not happy with the overall situation” and was prepared to impose new sanctions on Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expecting a “tough” US response. There has been no progress in talks between Trump and President Vladimir Putin on a ceasefire on August 15. Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine.
Flames were seen shooting from the roof of the cabinet complex in the heart of Kiev in Sunday’s attack, marking the first time a government office has been targeted in more than two and a half years of conflict.
Ukraine’s emergency services said the drone strike damaged several high-rise buildings in the capital. Russia has denied targeting civilians in Ukraine, saying it targeted a factory and a logistics hub in Kiev.
The Russian Defense Ministry said no other targets within the city limits of Kiev were hit.
Zelensky said in his evening speech that today’s attack requires a strong response from partners. He added, “Putin is testing the world. He also said we expect a strong response from the United States. It is needed now.”
Ukrainian Air Force data shows that Russia fired at least 810 drones and 13 missiles from Saturday night to Sunday morning, including the first time government buildings were attacked.
