Akhtar Hossen, the member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was targeted with eggs upon his arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday (local time). Observers reported that Mizanur Rahman, a local leader of the Awami League, was seen hurling the eggs.
Akhtar was part of the delegation accompanying interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, who is participating in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.The event occurred at approximately 5:00pm local time on 22 September (Monday) as they exited Terminal 4 of the airport.
Accompanying Akhtar Hossen were Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Tasnim Jara, a senior joint member secretary of the NCP, both of whom were part of the delegation.
During this time, local supporters of the Awami League verbally attacked Tasnim Jara and organized a protest.
Witness Habibur Rahman, an airport employee, informed Prothom Alo that two eggs were thrown one after the other, both striking Akhtar Hossen on his back.
He did not respond and continued on his way. Once the group entered their vehicles, Awami League supporters lay down in front of the cars, chanting “Joy Bangla” among other slogans. New York police worked to disperse the crowd.
From 1:00 pm local time, supporters of the BNP and Awami League had assembled at Terminal 8 of JFK Airport, exchanging slogans and counter-slogans. Professor Muhammad Yunus and his team are residing at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan.
The US Awami League had obtained permission to stage a protest there, and they held demonstrations in the evening. NCP and Awami League supporters occupied opposing sides of the street, yelling rival slogans.
