Robi and Grameenphone operators are launching 5G network services for the first time in Bangladesh. Whereas Robi initially launched 5G network in Dhaka-Chittagong and some Parts of Sylhet, and Grameenphone has decided to initially launch the 5G network services in all divisional cities of Bangladesh.
The move was taken after Bangladesh’s 2022 spectrum auction, where the operators purchased $1.23 billion 190 MHz spectrum to implement the 5G project.
How 5G is different from 4G
5G is the fifth generation of mobile network which is much more powerful and advanced than 4G. It is specially designed to offer higher peak and higher data transfer rates, with significantly lower latency. In 5G network operating systems, International technical standards for 5G (IMT-2020) build the target of 20 Gbps peak downlink, 10 Gbps uplink and as low as 1 millisecond over-the-air latency under ideal conditions.
The 5G operating system has much faster downloads and much faster processing speeds than 4G. Considering the needs of customers and looking at the increasingly mobile world, the 5G network operating system provides much higher bandwidth and data transfer, which is able to meet customer needs in the fastest possible time.
Although 5G networks require suitable devices, the 5G network will be very useful for Bangladesh. The long-term potential of the 5G network will have a very significant impact on the industry, keeping pace with the current world.
How popular 5G is in other countries
The demand for 5G in the world today is vast and unparalleled. A survey has shown that the number of 5G network subscriptions in the first half of 2025 was 2.4 billion which is expected to reach 2.9 billion by the end of this year. This number shows that currently more customers are using 5G networks than 4G.
The United States, China, Japan and other developed countries now have a large number of 5G network operators. It is also reported that China will build 4.4 million 5G stations by 2025. It is also reported that the number of 5G network subscriptions in South Korea will exceed 30 million by 2025. Interest in 5G networks is also increasing day by day in South Asian countries. More than 250 million people in India are already using 5G networks. Experimental 5G networks have also been launched in Nepal. In view of this, the first 5G network has been experimentally launched, which will quickly become very popular among the people.
