World-renowned chip design company Arm Holdings on Tuesday unveiled its next-generation mobile chip design series. This Arm’s new chip design set, called ‘Lumex’, is built with artificial intelligence (AI) technology in mind, which will be able to work without the internet on mobile devices like smartphones and smartwatches.
There are four types of Lumex designs, some of which are less powerful but more battery-efficient, making them suitable for smartwatches or other wearable devices. On the other hand, there will be a high-performance version, which will be able to run large-scale AI models on high-end feature-rich smartphones, without the help of cloud computing.
Arm general manager and senior vice president of Arm Chris Burgi, said “AI is now essential for important tasks like real-time interaction or AI translation. We’re seeing AI become a kind of expectation,”
The Lumex designs announced Tuesday are part of the company’s Compute Subsystems (CSS) business, which aims to provide handset makers and chip designers with more ready-to-use technology so they can bring new products to market faster.
The more complete designs that Arm is now developing for data centers and mobile phones are part of the company’s long-term revenue growth strategy, which also plans to grow revenue from other sources besides smartphones.
Arm also said it will invest more in research into making its own chips and has already hired several key personnel for this. The Lumex design is optimized for 3-nanometer technology, a process supplied by world-renowned semiconductor company TSMC. Apple is using this 3-nanometer TSMC technology in its new iPhone chips.
Arm will officially unveil the Lumex design at a launch event in China today. Chris Burgi said, “Apart from Apple and Samsung, the world’s top handset makers are now mainly based in China. So this announcement is being made in China.”
