Human Rights Watch (HRW) has revealed that Indian authorities are attempting to forcibly deport a large number of Rohingya to Bangladesh and Myanmar starting in May 2025. Since May, the Indian government has been deporting and detaining Rohingya and Bengali-speaking Muslims in states ruled by the Indian Janata party, accusing them of being illegal immigrants and attempting to force them into Bangladesh and Myanmar.

HRW data revealed that among the forcibly expelled Indians were at least 192 Rohingya who were registered with the UN refugee agency but were forcibly deported to Bangladesh and Myanmar as illegal immigrants. It has also been reported that Indian authorities forced 40 Rohingya to swim and drown on a ship off the coast of Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Pearson, Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the Indian government’s illegal expulsion of the Rohingya represents a gross abuse and violation of their Human rights and international law. Recently Human Rights Watch found 9 men and women Rohingya from Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp in Bangladesh who had come from India.

Six Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh have alleged that Indian authorities tortured them, took their money, mobile phones and UNHCR registration cards and pushed them towards Bangladesh. There are also about 40,000 Rohingya living in India, of which about 20,000 are registered with the UN refugee agency.

In March, the UN wrote a special letter to the Indian government, expressing concern over the arbitrary and mistreatment of Rohingya refugees. Meanwhile, India’s BJP government is forcibly deporting the Rohingya from India to Bangladesh, calling them illegal Bangladeshis, which is a gross violation of human rights law.
